Description
Deep in the Ariege, a department of south west France, the sunflowers were coming to their prime, their black eyes fixed upon the afternoon sun. I had got myself lost in a rural maze of maze and sunflower fields. Having found essential shade, I had been painting for a couple of hours with not a soul passing by when a flurry of elderly, sinewy, cyclists sped by and then they were gone. It seemed a very French moment.
