About the Print
Deep in the Ariege, a department of south west France, the sunflowers were coming to their prime, their black eyes fixed upon the afternoon sun. Lost in a rural maze of maize and sunflower fields, having found essential shade, I had been painting for a couple of hours. I had seen no sign of life, when a flurry of elderly, sinewy, cyclists sped by and then they were gone. It seemed a very French moment.
