Not far from Helpston, the home of the 19th century poet John Clare, lies a road with nine small stone bridges that span the River Welland and the various drainage ditches or “dykes” that criss-cross the Cambridgeshire fens.
Clare referenced this area in his poem “The Flood”, describing how the water flowed under the arches of the bridges:
“On Lolham Brigs in wild and lonely mood
I’ve seen the winter floods their gambols play
Through each old arch that trembled while I stood
Bent o’er its wall to watch the dashing spray”
This image was done in response to that poem and for the Faber & Faber book cover for a volume of John Clares poetry.
